Rappahannock Information

At the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Rappahannock is bounded by Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Page and Warren counties, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Rappahannock County was formed from part of Culpeper County in 1833 by an Act of the General Assembly.   The 2005 estimated population was 7,271.  See more of Rappahannock's census Quick Facts here.

Rappahannock County was originally inhabited by Native Americans; the Manahoacs and Iroquois.  As the settlers moved farther out, Rappahannock became occupied mainly by those of English decent from the Tidewater region.

Rappahannock County has maintained it's rural/agricultural atmosphere.  One can find many farms, orchards, Christmas tree farms, vineyards and Bread & Breakfast establishments throughout the county.  Once a main path for visitors to Skyline Drive, Route 211 now houses many antique shops and other unique shops.

Villages/Towns within Rappahannock County include:

Amissville - French settlers arrived from Manakin, a Huguenot Colony located on the James River.  Named after the Amiss family from the Colony at Manakin.

Chester Gap

Flint Hill

Sperryville - located just before the entrance to Skyline drive.  Be sure to take a hike up "Old Rag" Mountain.

Washington ("Little Washington") - County seat - surveyed and plotted by George Washington in 1749 and established as a town in 1796.

Woodville

One of the unique farms you'll find in Rappahannock County (Amissville area).  Yes, they are camels!  The farm also includes zebras!  You never know what you will see as you drive by!
