Madison Information

Located in the central Piedmont region, Madison is bounded by Culpeper, Orange, Greene, Page and Rappahannock counties.  Madison County was formed in 1792 and was named for the Madison family,  which produced one our nation's early presidents, James Madison.  The 2005 estimated population was 13,398.  See more of Madison's census Quick Facts here.

President Herbert Hoover bought land in the mountain area of Madison and built his summer camp there.  His official visit to the town of Madison in August 1929 is commemorated annually.

The annual Taste of the Mountains Main Street Festival is held each year in early September.  The festival reflects the historical Mountain and Traditional cultures of England and Germany in 18th & 19th Century America, especially that of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Crafters are encouraged to demonstrate their crafting during the Festival.

Another major attraction to Madison county includes Graves Mountain Lodge's Apple Harvest Festival.  Held each year during the second and third weekends in October, this festival draws a large crowd and offers apple butter and Brunswick stew being cooked in kettles over and open fire, entertainment including bluegrass music, cloggers, arts and crafts, hayrides and horseback rides.  The orchards are open for apple picking or you may select your own from the apple bins at the picnic pavilion.
