Culpeper InformationLocated in the Piedmont, midway between the Washington DC skyline and Skyline Drive, Mount Vernon and Monticello, Bull Run and Appomattox, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the deep blue Atlantic, Culpeper was formed in 1748 from Orange and was named for Lord Culpeper, governor of Virginia from 1680 to 1683. The Rappahannock River runs upon its northeast boundary and the Rapidan on its southeast and southwest boundaries. Culpeper has a small town atmosphere. In 1993, Culpeper was recognized as "One of America's Top 10 Small Towns". However, recent development has made it one of Virginia's 10 fastest growing counties. In 1775, the Culpeper Minutemen were formed in "Clayton's Old Field" near the site of present-day Yowell Meadow Park. Both Confederate and Union troops occupied the Town on various occasions during the Civil War. The armies of Jackson, Stuart, Pope and Meade marched through and were quartered in Culpeper. The battles of Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain were fought in Culpeper county. Communities located within Culpeper County include: Amissville: split between two counties (Culpeper and Rappahannock), Amissville is the north western portion of Culpeper County. The drive from Warrenton up Route 211 provides wonderful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Popular developments in Amissville include Quail Ridge and Wildwood Forest. Brandy Station: located on the north eastern end of Culpeper along Route 29, Brandy Station is rich in history being the site of the Civil War battle of Brandy Station. Many residents in the area are working to preserve the land where this battle was fought. Boston: located in the western portion of the county bordering with Rappahannock County, Boston is a beautiful area with magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Culpeper (town): being the hub of the county, the Town of Culpeper offers a wide range of properties from the beautiful historic district to the many new home developments. Jeffersonton: located in the north western corner with Amissville, Jeffersonton is home of the popular subdivision South Wales and the South Wales Golf Course. Lignum: located east of Culpeper down Route 3 towards Fredericksburg. Mitchells: located southeast of Culpeper down Route 522 towards Fredericksburg. Rapidan: located east of Culpeper towards Orange. Reva: located south of the town, Reva shares it's border with Madison county. The subdivision Riverbend is located in Reva. Richardsville: located east of Culpeper towards Stafford and Spotsylvania Counties. Rixeyville: located north of town along Route 229, between Culpeper and Jeffersonton.
